A preservative is essential to help prevent microbes growing in a product that contains water.
You will also notice that some products do not have a preservative. These are called anhydrous products (meaning water-free) like, balms, lip balms, whipped body butters, and scrubs. Because they do not contain water, they do not require preservatives. On the other side of things, there are preservative's that can also be harmful to you.
