Meet Don’t Bug Me: Two Botanical Scents for Outdoor Days
Margaret RustauskySummer in the mountains brings so many things I love: lake trips, family picnics, time in the garden, and warm evenings on the porch. There is something special about slowing down and enjoying the outdoors, even when the bugs invite themselves along!
That outdoor spirit is part of the story behind Don’t Bug Me, our botanical spray available in Lavender and Peppermint. Here is a closer look at the blends, along with an important distinction between enjoying botanical ingredients and choosing proven bite protection.
Meet the Botanical Blend
Don’t Bug Me combines hydrosol, witch hazel extract, apple cider vinegar, and aromatic essential oils. Both scent options include lemongrass, citronella, eucalyptus, rosemary, and tea tree oils, with their own additional ingredients giving each blend its character.
Essential oils are ingredients, not a guarantee of effectiveness or universal safety. A pleasant scent or a plant-based origin does not establish how well a finished spray repels a particular insect or how long any protection lasts.
Choose Your Scent
Lavender
Lavender hydrosol and lavender oil bring a floral character, with lemon and the shared blend of aromatic botanical oils. It is an option for those who enjoy a lavender-forward scent.
Peppermint
Neroli hydrosol and peppermint oil join sweet orange and the shared botanical oil blend for a refreshing mint-and-citrus character.
Both are available in a 4 oz. spray. Check the complete ingredient list for your chosen scent and follow the product label’s directions and precautions.
Natural Does Not Mean “Chemical-Free”
Botanical ingredients are made of chemical compounds, too. Rather than calling a formula “chemical-free,” “toxin-free,” or automatically safer than another product, it is more useful to look at its ingredients, directions, testing, and intended use.
The same care applies to claims about children, sensitive skin, and environmental benefits. A natural origin alone does not establish that a product is suitable for every family member or harmless to wildlife.
Choose Bite Protection Based on Evidence
For preventing mosquito bites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends EPA-registered insect repellents. The CDC notes that the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents, including some natural repellents, is unknown.
This article does not establish Don’t Bug Me’s EPA registration status, protection duration, or effectiveness against mosquitoes or ticks. It should not be taken as evidence that this spray prevents insect-borne illness.
DEET should not be dismissed as dangerous simply because it is synthetic. The CDC includes DEET among the active ingredients in EPA-registered repellents that are proven safe and effective when used as directed. Some EPA-registered options use plant-derived active ingredients, too. The finished product and its label matter more than a simple “natural versus synthetic” comparison.
Plan for Comfortable Outdoor Time
- Choose proven protection: Follow public-health guidance and the directions on your chosen insect repellent, including reapplication instructions.
- Cover up: Loose-fitting long sleeves and pants provide an additional layer of protection against mosquito bites.
- Plan for your destination: Consider local insect and disease guidance, especially when traveling.
- Read before use: Check age restrictions, ingredient information, and precautions rather than assuming every spray suits everyone.
