Fall Into A Skincare Routine For Colder Weather

Whew, Fall has arrived! I am loving these cooler nights!

Along with those changes I have also noticed the changes in my skin.

Have you?

We have endured those hot days of summer, spending time out on the lake or in the garden while in the sun; a few of my favorite things to do! We use a lighter moisturizer and of course sunscreen to protect us from the everyday UV rays. Well, it’s now time to change courses on our skincare routine.

With change of seasons comes change on how we protect our skin from colder temperatures outside, combined with stuffy heaters inside that can leave your skin feeling dry, chapped, and uncomfortable.

At Essentials Everything we’ve got you covered on how to protect your skin for the upcoming changes of those chilly months.

SWITCH TO A CREAM OR OIL BASED CLEANSER

The easiest place to start is changing the texture of your cleanser to a cream or oil-based cleanser.

BE ON THE HUNT FOR NOURISHING WINTER SKIN INGREDIENTS

Like honey, jojoba, avocado, calendula, vitamin E, zinc, shea, cocoa, aloe, rosehip, pumpkin seed oil and hemp.  Use thicker protective formulas that can help soothe and heal the skin

MOISTURIZE WITH EMOLLIENTS, HYDRATE WITH HUMECTANTS

Moisturize like never before. Emollients will lock in moisture to protect your skin barrier. Look for ingredients like butters, oils. Humectants will hydrate the skin; look for hyaluronic acid or vegetable glycerin. Daily moisturizing can help nourish, hydrate and protect the skin from harsh conditions outdoors. Indulge in richer body lotions to prevent the rest of your skin from uncomfortable dryness or cracking.

INCREASE OR LIMIT YOUR EXFOLIATION

Skincare routines are not a one size fits all. Flaky and dry skin can prevent your products from working correctly, but over-exfoliating can leave the skin sensitized with greater chance of reacting to frigid temperatures. Exfoliate more often if your skin is dull/rough and blocking products from sinking in. Choose a gentle method of exfoliating if your skin becomes sensitive.

DITCH ALCOHOL LACED MAKEUP SETTING SPRAYS AND USE A HYDROSOL MIST INSTEAD

Many popular makeup setting sprays are full of drying alcohols. Make the switch to a hydrating hydrosol mist to refresh the skin and add a glow to your complexion.

AVOID EXTREME HOT/COLD WATER ON THE SKIN

Your skin already is experiencing cold to hot reactions from the environment, so it is best to avoid prolonged too hot, or too cold water when washing your face. Room temperature is always best for regular use and won’t dry out your skin.

BE AWARE OF DEHYDRATING BEVERAGES

I know we all like those Pumpkin Lattes, but caffeinated drinks like coffee, black tea, green tea, hot chocolate, as well as wine and sugary drinks, will dehydrate your skin from the inside out. If your skin is reacting and very sensitive, try limiting your intake of these types of drinks to let your skin heal.

INCREASE WATER INTAKE AND HYDRATING FOODS

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It’s not repeated without reason – drinking water has its multitude of health benefits, including keeping the appearance of your skin younger and fresher. Wake up your water with lime or lemon to increase hydrating abilities and hydrate your skin from within by consuming more water rich fruits.
